Understanding Notes on Sharkey
On Sharkey, posts are called Notes. They appear on your timeline in chronological order, with new Notes showing up in real time.
Interacting with Notes
Each Note has several buttons that let you interact with it.
Reply … Click this button to reply to a Note. You can also reply to someone else's reply, allowing conversations to continue in a thread.
Boost … Share someone else's Note with your followers by boosting it. You can also quote a Note and add your own comments.
Reactions … Express your feelings about a Note using emoji reactions. More information about reactions is covered below.
Menu … Open the Note's menu to view its details, copy its link, and access other available actions.
Emoji Reactions
Sharkey supports a variety of emoji reactions. Instead of simply clicking a like button, you can use different emojis to express your feelings or respond to a Note in a more personal way.
To add a reaction, click the smiley face button on the Note and choose an emoji.
Changed your mind? You can remove your reaction by clicking the minus (-) button.
Timelines
Sharkey offers several timelines to help you discover Notes from different parts of the network. Depending on your server's configuration and policies, some timelines may not be available.
Home … Shows Notes from accounts you follow.
Local … Shows Notes posted by users on your own server.
Social … Combines Notes from your Home and Local timelines.
Bubble … Shows Notes from connected servers selected by your server's administrators.
Global … Displays Notes from across all servers connected to yours.
You can switch between these timelines at the top of your screen whenever you like.
Sharkey also supports list timelines and channel timelines, which offer additional ways to organize and discover Notes. For more information about timelines, visit the Misskey Hub timeline guide.
Note Visibility
When writing a Note, you can choose who will be able to see it. Make sure you understand each visibility option before publishing.
Public … Your Note is visible to everyone and can appear on public timelines.
Home … Your Note is intended for the Home timeline rather than public timelines. However, people may still see it when visiting your profile, through followers, or when someone boosts it.
Followers … Your Note is visible only to your followers. Other people cannot see it, and they cannot boost it.
Direct … Your Note is sent only to the users you specify, who will be notified. This can be used for conversations similar to direct messages.
Important privacy reminder: Direct Notes are not a secure way to share sensitive information. Server administrators may be able to access content stored on their server, including Direct Notes. Be cautious when sending private information, especially to people or servers you do not trust.
Defederated Notes
Defederate … Enabling this option prevents your Note from federating to other servers. Users on other servers will not be able to view the Note directly, regardless of the visibility setting you selected.
Content Warnings and Sensitive Content
Sharkey lets you hide the main body of a Note behind a content warning (CW).
When you add a content warning, the text you enter in the comments or warning field appears in place of the Note's main content. Other users can click Read more to reveal the hidden text.
Content warnings are useful for following your server's guidelines, providing context, and hiding spoilers or potentially sensitive material. They also let other users decide whether they want to view the content.
For attachments that need to be marked as sensitive under your server's rules, or that you do not want displayed directly, enable the Sensitive flag.
